About Mestre Tonho Materia: Antonio Carlos Gomes Conceição, Mestre Tonho Matéria — is the first artist to put capoeira in musical shows — founded the Cultural Association of Capoeira Mangangá. At 12 he decided he wanted to be a capoeirista, as he used to see many rodas de capoeira in street festivals in Salvador, especially the Mestre Caiçara’s capoeira, which years later he constantly attended. Currently, he develops a social work with capoeira in the neighborhood where he was born, Pau Miúdo, with more than 400 children, teenagers and adults. The group has seven branches throughout the city of Salvador. Aside from his work as a capoeirista, Mestre Tonho Materia is a prolific composer and has at various intervals fronted the Bahian Carnaval band and Afro Bloco, Olodum, which gained international recognition after recording with Michael Jackson. Mestre Tonho Materia has recorded with internationally known Bahian stars including Daniela Mercury and Terra Samba, to name a few, and has recorded numerous capoeira and Carnaval albums. He is an expert in the folk dances associated with capoeira and promises a challenging, engaging and culturally stimulating workout.
